Disordered (2018) is a video installation featuring two documented performances and edited found footage. The performances each feature me reading an excerpt aloud from a book, one from Michael Warner's 'The Trouble with Normal' and one from Larry Kramer's 'Faggots'. The audio from the videos, playing simultaneously, overlaps and becomes difficult to understand, leaving the viewer watching two identical figures reading different texts but unable to decipher what they are saying. Footage from a late 80s gay porn is projected over the performances. The intent of the work is to reflect on the changing discourse around and representation of queerness and the ways in which young queer people contend with that information and history. By placing myself in the midst of material from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I am interested in highlighting and exploring my own experience of queer discourse, history, and stereotypes, and how I understand myself in relation to them.
Disordered was presented as part of VIDEOSTORE at the University of Windsor's School of Creative Arts.
